Vortex Flowmeters & Precession Vortex Flowmeters

Vortex Flowmeters & Precession Vortex Flowmeters are flow measurement instruments based on the principle of fluid vibration, but there are some differences in their working principles, structures and applications.

1. Working Principle

Precession Vortex Flow Meters:

After the fluid passes through a special vortex generator, it forms a vortex precession (rotating motion). The precession frequency of the vortex is proportional to the flow rate of the fluid, and the flow rate is calculated by detecting the vortex frequency. The frequency of vortex precession is usually lower.

Vortex Flowmeters:

When the fluid passes through a blunt body (such as a triangular column or cylinder), alternated shedding vortexes (Karman Vortex Street) are generated downstream of the blunt body. The frequency of the vortex shedding proportional to the flow rate of the fluid, and the flow rate is calculated by detecting the vortex frequency. The frequency of the vortex shedding is usually higher.

2. Structure

Precession Vortex Flowmeters:

There is a vortex generator inside, which has a relatively complex structure. Longer straight pipe segments are usually required to stabilize the flow field.

Vortex Flowmeters:

There is a blunt body (vortex street generator) inside, and the structure is relatively simple. The requirements for straight pipe sections are lower and more convenient to install.

3. Applicable Medium

Precession Vortex Flowmeters:

Suitable for gases, liquids and steam. It is more suitable for clean medium and is easily affected by impurities.

Vortex Flowmeters:

Suitable for gases, liquids and steam. The cleanliness of the medium is high, and impurities may affect the measurement accuracy.

4. Accuracy and Stability

Precession Vortex Flowmeters:

High accuracy, but may be disturbed by vibration at high flow velocity. And high requirements for installation conditions.

Vortex Flowmeters:

High accuracy and good stability. It has strong vibration resistance and is suitable for industrial sites.

5. Applications

Precession Vortex Flowmeters:

Commonly used for flow measurement of natural gas, air and other gases. Suitable for small and medium flow rates and low flow velocity.

Vortex Flowmeters:

Widely used in industrial process control, such as steam, liquid and gas flow measurement. Suitable for medium and high flow rates and high velocity.
